In 2016, Mr. Kern visited the KHRISTIYA SEVA NIKETAN NURSING SCHOOL in Sarenga, India which is sponsored by the Diocese of Durgapur in West Bengal, within the Church of North India. The 3-1/2 year Nursing School program has a small faculty and 100 female students, with 25 admitted to each class. It focuses on rescuing young ladies from impoverished and dire family circumstances and giving them the tools with which to have a career. As stated on the school's website, "[We are] proud of producing some of the finest nurses who in their lives became blessings in the lives of the people." For the last three years, all 75 of its graduates were certified and immediately employed by the Indian state health care system.
The difference this program makes in the lives of young women cannot be overestimated. The options for an 18 year old Indian girl with no education are few and she may expect to earn approx. $300 per year or will be expected to immediately become a mother. The life of an educated nurse is truly an open book, with an income expectation of nearly $3,000 per year and the opportunity to gain employment throughout the country.
After meeting with administrators and faculty about the best ways to help the nursing school, the first objective was to acquire a power transformer for the Nursing School so that it could modernize its power supply and with a small investment, cut its costs by more than 90%. This was accomplished in 2017 through the generosity of St. Michael's Church, Charleston, South Carolina.
Mr. Kern also learned of the students' need for modern, individual "Nursing Kits" and has arranged for contributions of US $140.00 (EUR 115.00) to help the Nursing School realize one complete kit for each student. We believe that these kits will improve the quality of care provided by student nurses and allow them to care for many more patients than they would otherwise be able to see.
Our goal is to help the school secure all 100 kits by the end of 2018! A full list of the items of equipment provided to the nursing students (valued at $440.00 in the United States) is provided here:
