One of the greatest sopranos of the 20th century, who performed in more than 1,200 operas and concerts including 270 at the New York Met in the post-war era was Italian singer Renata Tebaldi. Umberto Toscanini called hers the "voce d'angelo" (voice of an angel) while fans referred to her as "Miss Sold Out". Upon her passing in 2004, she bestowed her estate to the organization of the FONDAZIONE RENATA TEBALDI which is based in the Republic of San Marino, where she lived.
Since its organization, the foundation has held biennial voice competitions and concerts for emerging opera and baroque singers. Contestants are drawn from around the world and the foundation's panels of jurors are drawn from some fo the top opera houses, classical composers and arrangers in the world.
Winning contestants are awarded contracts to join a preselected premier opera house. These have included the Vienna State Opera in Austria, the La Scala and San Giorgio companies in Italy, the Paris Opera in France and the Metropolitan Opera House in the US. The voice competition's long-time patron institutions are the Teatra de La Scala in Milan and the Teatro di San Giorgio in Naples.
Mr. Kern is assisting the foundation secure its charitable status and position in the United States.
